Belisama information -
There is not much information out there.
Belisama is believed to have been worshipped as a summer solar Goddess, whose name means summer bright. She is thought to be the consort of Belanus, the sun God of healing who we also invoked for our ritual today.
She is also a lake and river goddess venerated in Gaul and she came to Great Britain when the Gauls migrated here. The Romans equated her with their own Minerva and renamed here Minervae Belissimae. Her name was given to the River Ribble (Belisama Fluvius) in Lancashire as we know from Ptolemy’s map of Northern Britain.
As well as being a Goddess of fire and water, Belisama also has links with the forge and crafts, healing and purification.
Meditation -
Take a deep breath in through your nose and a long sigh out through your mouth. Feel any tension in your body start to melt away as you become comfortable and relaxed.
Take another breath in through your nose, the air going deep into your stomach, then slowly and gently release the breath out through your mouth.
Your everyday thoughts and worries fade away as you bring your attention solely on your breath as it moves gently in and slowly out.
The world around you starts to dissipate and as it slips away you open your mind’s eye to find yourself in a forest.
It is evening and all around you is bathed in a dazzling orange glow of dusk as the summer sun begins to set. It has been a hot day and so you welcome the cool evening breeze as it rustles the leaves overhead and gently kisses your skin.
The forest is full of the evening song of all kinds of birds. They seem to be enjoying the breeze too as they sing from their treetop homes. You listen intently for a while to see if you can make out what type of bird is singing to you. Is it a starling, a mistle thrush or a chaffinch maybe?
Feeling very relaxed you begin to look further into the forest and you see a faint glow of what appears to be a small fire in a clearing and you make your way towards it.
When you reach the fire you feel its heat warming you from what has now become a chilly evening. Beside the fire are two wood piles, one pile is heaped with silver birch and the other with blackthorn branches. They are waiting to be placed on the fire.
You watch the fire for a while, Feel the heat, hear the crackle and pop as the fire consumes the twigs and branches to reach a little higher and become a little bigger. The flames bring light to the darkness of the forest but at the same time they cast shadows too. Away and behind the fire you see that shadows begin to dance just as the flames do, reaching higher and higher.
Smell the smoke as the light breeze drifts it around you, let the smoke cleanse and purify your aura.
You stare into the heart of the fire and see the shape of a woman emerge through the flames and burning wood. She comes towards you white hot, glowing with gold. You recognise her as Belisama. She asks you what you want to release and you tell her.
She asks you to give her a branch from the pile of blackthorn. You place the black branch in Belisama’s left hand and as she takes it you are able to release your issue. And as you do the blackthorn branch bursts into flames in her hands, and she raises it above her head as an offering to the fire. It is transformed into pure light.
Belisama then asks you what you would like to keep. You tell her.
She asks you to give her a branch from the pile of silver birch. You place the white branch in Belisama’s right hand and as she takes it you state that you would like to keep this issue in a way that serves your highest good. The white branch bursts into flames in her hand and she raises it above her head as an offering to the fire. It is transformed into pure light.
You thank Belisama and she smiles and then merges with the flames to become part of the heart of the fire once more.
Holding onto this experience you begin to become aware of your breathing again. Take a deep cleansing breath in and a long sigh out. You gently become aware of the world around you once more, wiggle your toes, wiggle your fingers and when you are ready open your eyes.
Journal any messages or insights you were given.
