Whilst working with the spirit of Horse I decided to ask him for help with bringing fertility to the land, in the form of bringing rain. The rainy season is very late to start this year in our region of Costa Rica. On a journey to meet Horse he told me to write him into the spell I was planning to perform to call in the rain. I had already decided to invite Chaac, the Mayan God of Rain, Thunder and Lightning, and so I also included Horse.
Before performing the spell I researched whether horses had ever been associated with bringing rain and found that in many cultures this was indeed the case! I learned that because of the thundering of their hooves they have often been associated with thunder and storms, and there are many other types of associations with weather, including from Celtic, Norse, Lakota and Chinese mythology. I wasn’t expecting to find anything related to the Americas, however, because horses were only introduced with the colonial era. Therefore I was astonished to read this:
“A Unique Post-Colonial Mystery: Tzimin Chac, the Mayan Rain Horse
One of the most fascinating blending of cultures happened in Guatemala after the Spanish conquest. When Hernán Cortés left a wounded, majestic black horse behind with the Itza Maya, the locals—never having seen such a massive creature—treated it like a deity. They placed it in a temple and fed it flowers and poultry (which ultimately caused the horse to starve).
Terrified of spiritual retaliation, they carved a stone replica of the horse named Tzimin Chac, which eventually became syncretized with Chaac, the ancient Mayan rain god. For a period, this "stone horse" was prayed to specifically to bring rain to the crops”.
Obviously, I had to include Tzimin Chac in my spell! Here is the spell I performed, with gratitude to Horse, and all the spirits and deities I called on:
Spell for Calling in the Rain
(This was adapted from a spell on https://spells8.com/rain-prayers-invoking-the-sacred-waters/)
Items needed:
- Offering for Chaac (dark chocolate)
- Crystals of correct colours – red jasper, yellow aventurine, black obsidian, white howlite for Chaac (these are the colours associated with the four-fold identity of Chaac and they are linked to the cardinal directions)
- Offering for Horse / Tzimin Chac
- Sigil sticker and tape (I created a sigil from the sentence “This land has abundant rain”)
- Sellotape
- Plant pot tray
- Incense – jasmine – the herb of attraction, holder and lighter
- Empty jar
- Blue or silver candle and holder
- Bowl of rainwater
- Fresh mint and basil
- Phone and speaker for rain sounds
Steps:
1. Set out everything outside on a table. Stick the sigil sticker in the middle of the plant pot tray and cover with sellotape. Place the glass jar on top. Place the crystals around it in the cardinal directions associated with the four Chaacs (white, north; red, east; black, west; and yellow, south).
2. Light the incense, cleanse the area of negative energy and cast a circle:
“Circle of power, circle of protection, I cast you now to ward off ill intention”.

3. Ground and centre. Feel the connection to the land and its needs. Ask Mother Gaia, spirits of the land, sky and clouds to join.
4. Light the candle and say the following:
“By this flame, I call to the heavens.
Let my intention rise like smoke,
bringing the gift of rain to this land.”
5. Ask for assistance from Chaac.
“Chaac, powerful bringer of rain, thunder and lightning, please hear my call. Bless this land with your nurturing waters. Nature needs your help this season more than ever.”
Make the offering.
6. Ask for assistance from Horse:
“Strong, beautiful and majestic Horse, please hear my call. Tzimin Chac, powerful rain deity, with your thundering hooves please bring the rain to these lands”.
Make the offering.
7. Place the mint or basil in the bowl of water. Stir it clockwise with your fingers, visualizing rain clouds forming gently high above you.
8. Play rain sounds on the speaker. As you do so, chant the following:
“Rain from the heavens, fall to the earth.
Quench the soil, bring new birth.
By air, fire, water, and stone,
Let rain come to this land, my will be known”.
At this point I visualised Chaac and Tzimin Chaac thundering around the sky, dancing and galloping to raise clouds to bring in the rain.
9. Pour the bowl of water onto the ground as an offering. Visualize your intention manifesting as real rain. I visualised raindrops splashing on the deck and garden.
10. Thank the spirits and deities for their presence, extinguish the candle, and ground yourself again to release any excess energy you are storing. Open the circle.
“Circle of protection, circle of power, I thank you for your help this hour”.
11. Leave the tray with the crystals, empty jar and offerings outside. I told the spirits and deities that I was leaving this empty jar for them to fill with rain so that we would have the right amount of rain this season. Say a petition every time passing this.
