Fluorite by Sue Perryman

For January, I wanted to choose a colourful crystal that would bring brightness to the dull and dreary days, have properties suitable for the first calendar month of the year and still be easily obtainable and reasonably priced. I looked at quite a few in my collection, but ended up going with my first choice, Fluorite.

Fluorite is made of calcium fluoride and has a hardness of 4. It comes in a wide range of colours including clear, green, purple and blue, it is often found with several colours in one specimen. Each colour has its own properties.

Purple/Violet: Activates the third eye chakra, excellent for meditation, purification, protects against nightmares and bad dreams.

Green: Cleanses the heart chakra, grounding, absorbs negative energies.

Clear: Activates the Crown Chakra, clears and purifies the aura, can increase the energies of other crystals in healing.

Blue: Activates the throat chakra, enhances creativity, aids clear communication, calming, Effective for eye, nose ear and throat problems.

A pretty purple/blue variety of Fluorite has been mined in Castleton Derbyshire UK for 300 years. Known as Blue John stone, it was very popular in the 19th century but is becoming rarer now although a small amount is still mined each year. If you are in the area, the mine run tours, you can find out more at Some samples of Fluorite show fluorescence under ultraviolet light. In 1852 Fluorite gave its name to this phenomenon. In industry Fluorite is used as a flux for smelting and to produce some types of glass and enamels. Also known as Fluorspar, the name Fluorite comes from the Latin verb fluere, meaning ‘to flow’.

During January many of us will be thinking about what to do for Imbolc. This is a festival of purification, include Fluorite in your celebrations by keeping a piece on your altar to bring purification and cleansing to your festivities. Or make a Fluorite elixir, pour it into a spray bottle and use it to cleanse and purify your altar and home.

Fluorite absorbs negative energy from your aura and your environment, keep a few of the crystals around your home to keep the energy positive and clear.

If you are feeling totally disorganised and exhausted, take some time out to meditate with Fluorite, it will help you to feel calm and centred and able to tackle anything.

Keep a Fluorite crystal on or next to your computer to protect against electromagnetic stress.

A stone of the element of Air, Fluorite is the perfect crystal for studying or sitting exams, it helps with absorbing information, memory, concentration and focus.

Hold a small Fluorite tumble stone while working with any form of divination, it will enhance your intuition and help you stay calm and focused on any messages you may receive.

As Fluorite absorbs negative energy it will need to be cleansed regularly, this can be done in running water.

If you’re feeling scattered and unbalanced, holding a Fluorite crystal will help you to feel more stable, balanced and grounded.

Use Fluorite in manifestation spells, but always remember to follow up with an offering.
