For January, I wanted to choose a colourful crystal that would bring brightness to the dull and dreary days, have properties suitable for the first calendar month of the year and still be easily obtainable and reasonably priced. I looked at quite a few in my collection, but ended up going with my first choice, Fluorite.
Fluorite is made of calcium fluoride and has a hardness of 4. It comes in a wide range of colours including clear, green, purple and blue, it is often found with several colours in one specimen. Each colour has its own properties.
Purple/Violet: Activates the third eye chakra, excellent for meditation, purification, protects against nightmares and bad dreams.
Green: Cleanses the heart chakra, grounding, absorbs negative energies.
Clear: Activates the Crown Chakra, clears and purifies the aura, can increase the energies of other crystals in healing.
Blue: Activates the throat chakra, enhances creativity, aids clear communication, calming, Effective for eye, nose ear and throat problems.
A pretty purple/blue variety of Fluorite has been mined in Castleton Derbyshire UK for 300 years. Known as Blue John stone, it was very popular in the 19th century but is becoming rarer now although a small amount is still mined each year. In 1852 Fluorite gave its name to this phenomenon. In industry Fluorite is used as a flux for smelting and to produce some types of glass and enamels. Also known as Fluorspar, the name Fluorite comes from the Latin verb fluere, meaning ‘to flow’.
During January many of us will be thinking about what to do for Imbolc.
