Y Mabinogi: Exploring the Magic and Wisdom of Welsh Mythology by Mhara Starling

Book Review by Heather

How wonderful to have this concise primer for these magical tales of Welsh mythology written by Mhara Starling, who grew up with this mythology as she was born in North Wales, raised on the Isle of Anglesey, and is a native Welsh speaker.

The author guides the reader through each of the four branches of the Mabinogi, explaining the connections which draw them together, whilst interjecting with her personal experiences and suggestions of how to weave the wisdom held within these tales into your own magical and spiritual practices, what can these stories enable us to see within ourselves and society today.

As well as providing these narratives in an accessible, modern vernacular, the author encourages the reader to ponder whether the individuals mentioned are Gods, how are the themes held within the Mabinogi relevant and relatable to the issues we face today.   Ms Starling has also given the reader a chapter on the other seven tales found alongside the four branches, explaining why these are different, as well as why they are not always included in translations, which is very interesting.

Also supplied is a very useful guide to Welsh pronunciations, together with a glossary of how to say the names of the characters mentioned.   There is also an extensive bibliography.
