Springtime Garden Welcoming Ritual by Christine Carr

A gentle ritual for new plantings and those returning after winter

This ritual is perfect for any kind of garden, whether a big perennial garden, a cozy patio, or a few cherished pots by the window.

Choose a time when the light feels soft. Early evening is especially lovely, when the day is winding down and the birds are singing and chirping as the evening glow begins to settle in.

Walk into you garden space or in front of your plants, take a moment to simply observe, perhaps there are empty pots waiting, fresh soil turned, or new and returning plants already finding their place. Maybe you have planted up new plants and the garden is looking renewed. If you have a few potted herbs on your window sill.

What you’ll need

  • A small bowl of water (to symbolize nourishment)

  • A natural object you feel drawn to, a stone, shell, crystal or piece of wood (an offering to your garden space)

  • Cup of tea or favorite drink (for closing of ritual)

Place these gently among your plants, or beside your pots.

Sit quietly nearby. With one hand resting over your heart, take a few slow, steady breaths. Let yourself arrive fully. Imagine your plants thriving, growing vibrantly, rooted and full of healing vibrations  As you breathe in, take in their energy; as you exhale, soften into the moment.

When you feel grounded, reach out and lightly touch the soil, a leaf, a blossom, or even just the edge of a pot. In this moment acknowledge the turning of the season, as winter has passed and renewal has begun.

Welcoming Back the Perennials

If you have returning plants, greet them like old friends and say aloud or to yourself

"Welcome back, dear one. I’m so happy to see you again. I hope your rest was deep and restoring."

I like to greet each and every type of plant in garden, even the weeds.

Welcoming the New Plants

Now turn to your new additions. Greet them one by one.

Let your hand hover gently above each plant before touching it, and softly say:

"You are welcome here."

If it feels natural, speak to each plant with intention. For example, this is what I said to my new additions.

  • Lupine: Grow tall. Become bold.

  • Lavender: Soften this space. Bring calm and healing.

  • Rosemary: Root deeply. Bring clarity, remembrance, and protection.

  • Pansies: Brighten this garden. Bring steady joy and welcoming.

Let each plant feel seen, not as part of a group, but as an individual presence sharing your space.

Offering Water

Hold your bowl of water in both hands.Gently sprinkle a small amount onto each plant, offering these words:

May you be nourished.Grow in your own rhythm.May this space hold you in connection, renewal, love, and light.

Closing the Ritual

Complete your ritual by sitting in your garden space with a cup of your favorite tea or any favorite drink. Sip slowly. Take it in. Celebrate this quiet beginning, the return of life, and the promise of the growing season ahead.
