Peridot by Sue Perryman

I recently treated myself to a small peridot crystal. I knew nothing about its properties at the time but was drawn to its powerful energy. I was pleasantly surprised when I did a bit of research on it and found that this small, widely available stone is packed with positive properties, and since working with it, I have found it to be a truly remarkable and valuable addition for to my collection.

Peridot is the gem variety of Olivine which covers a group of yellow green - deep olive-green magnesium-iron silicate minerals that crystallize in the Orthorhombic system. For 3,000 years peridot has been gathered and mined on the inhospitable Egyptian Island of Zagbargad; it is also found in Pakistan, Burma, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and the USA It is one of only two gems formed, not in the earth's crust, but in the molten rock of the upper mantle, brought to the surface by the tremendous forces of earthquakes and volcanoes, the other is diamond.

Peridot minerals have also been found in rare pallasite meteorites formed some 4.5 billion years ago, remnants of our solar system's birth.

Olivine was found in comet dust brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe in 2006; traces of it were also found on the moon and detected by instrument on Mars by NASA's Global surveyor.

The ancient Egyptians used peridot for beads some 2,500 years ago. In the third and fourth centuries it was used for jewellery in Rome and Greece, it was seen as a symbol of the Sun and believed to confer the energy of royalty to the wearer.

Peridot is mentioned in the bible under the Hebrew name of 'Pitdah' and legend has it that it was a favourite gem of Cleopatra.

In ancient times peridot was believed to be a charm against sorcery, magic, evil spirits, night terrors and madness. It is still seen as a stone that protects the aura, purifies the physical and subtle bodies and alleviates emotional burdens, guilt and obsession.

Peridot activates and balances the heart and solar plexus chakras. It releases negative energies and blockages from your past and helps you to move forwards with your life. Placed over the heart chakra, peridot can alleviate feelings of jealousy, spite and anger and helps in all manner of heart related imbalances. Placed over the solar plexus, peridot helps to release nervous tension, and alleviate fear bringing feelings of deep relaxation and peace.

Peridot can be carried or worn at times when you need a boost of confidence. It calms nerves, promotes mental clarity, opens the mind to new levels of awareness and inspires a sense of happiness and well-being.

Used in meditation, peridot emits powerful feelings of peace and joy and helps one to access higher realms of consciousness and connect with divine energies for wisdom and guidance.

Believed by some to be an Elven stone, it can also be used to connect with the fairy realms, aiding communication with all types of nature spirits.

Peridot can be used to bless and bring success to your physical work as well as spiritual, whether it be tending your garden, raising a family, starting a new business or all forms of creativity and art. It brings a sense of self-worth and confidence to those plagued with self-doubt.

A stone of vitality and healing, Peridot is a complete tonic for the whole body that is said to heal and regenerate tissue, strengthen metabolism and aid everything from the heart, lungs, spleen and intestinal tract. Judy Hall in her book 'The Crystal Bible' states that when placed on the abdomen of a woman in labour it will strengthen the contractions and lessen the pain.

Peridot is a stone of transformation, prosperity and abundance and can be used magically for those purposes. Wear or carry peridot as a luck talisman, to calm nerves and to protect you from envy and gossip. Surround a green candle with peridot stones for prosperity magic or add to a sachet or mojo bag.
