March 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to our March 2026 Kitchen Witch newsletter.

A warm welcome to our March edition of the Newsletter. A lot has been going on at KWHQ. We had a bit of a breather during December and some of January, but the collective cogs of Rachel, Heather and myself started turning. We get together and boom! ideas start to perculate, other ideas come on the back of those first ideas and before we know it, we have rituals, and workshops booked in our diaries up until September, with more things to add.

We also have something very special just added to our Emporium. As you know, our lovely Heather not only reads the bones, she also reads the Ogam. The card's that she works with for readings, have the meanings written on the bottom and as we know with divination, those words don't always fit how we are feeling or what comes to us when we are reading, either for ourselves or someone else.

Heather had a vision to design a Ogam deck with just the tree names on in English and ancient Irish and an image of the leaf of that tree. Rachel's husband Pete is an excellent graphic designer, so together with Heather over a number of weeks, the Ogam Card Deck was created. It is a beautiful deck and we are very excited to add another deck to our Emporium. It is available for pre-order now on the link below.

We still have spaces for our Lithomancy workshop this month, details for that are further down the page. There is also another student moot this month - details will be on our Student Groups on our website.

There is a lot happening and all the events and general shenanigans will be posted here each month.

Have a great March!

Herbarium Card for March by Ness

This months card is from our Kitchen Witch Herbarium Oracle. It is Cleavers and Beginnings. As we approach the third month of this year, we start to shake off the winter slumber in our minds and start to plot and plan for the year ahead. It is an exciting time and there may be many thoughts of what you want to do and you are itching to put them in place. Cleavers aren't waiting for anyone, they are out there and climbing up and over everything to get to their destination. They teach us that now is the time to go for it! Get out there and do what you want to do!

What's Going on in Nature this Month from Ness

Finally! We have sunshine and blue skies - hurrah! It has rained here in the UK for pretty much 3 or 4 months and the ground is saturated.

There is a warmth to the sunshine and I think we are all breathing a contented sigh.

Spring has sprung - although i don't want to speak too soon, I am sure there are still some chilly and wet days to come yet.

Out in nature, there are many changes to the hedgerows and the fields and footpaths. Cleavers are everywhere - their bright and sticky green leaves starting to climb up the hedgerows. Sprouts of Nettles, tufts of Cow Parsley are showing. Dandelions are in bloom, a welcome first food for the insects and bees. Blossom is on the trees and in the hedges and Wild Arum is also plentiful where I live. Snowdrops, Daffodils, Lesser Celandine, Wild Primroses - so many pretty flowers making an early appearance.

I love this time of year with the promise of new beginnings and fresh starts. On March 20th, we celebrate the Spring Equinox - the official start of Spring here in the Northern Hemisphere. The clocks will go forward and the days will get progressively longer. Now I am looking forward to that!

My Goddess of the Month by Ness

Way back when I was a Kitchen Witch student, I took the Arc of the Goddess course which meant working with a particular Goddess each month for a whole year. I found this course to be very enjoyable and it allowed me to work with many Goddesses during that year that I had not worked with before. There was a title to go with each month's meditation and March's was 'Mountains.

I made a felt dolly to represent each of the Goddesses that I connected with and added to them, what I was gifted from them in my meditation. I found the Goddesses tucked away in a box, while I was looking for something, so have decided to show you one each month with a paragraph or three about them, how I worked with each Goddess and their correspondences.

March - Iris

This month was an interesting one for me - the Greek Goddess Iris came to me in the meditation. I had completely forgotten that I had worked with her. I have not heard her name mentioned in any other texts since and I wonder if she is one of the lesser known and worked with Goddess's.

Iris was a Goddess of the Rainbow, which is quite lovely, she is also a personal messenger to Hera. It is said that she rode the rainbow from where she reside, to bring the messages to us mortals here on earth. Being a Goddess of the rainbow - her connections were the sea and sky. We know that a rainbow is formed when sunlight refracts and reflects within water during, or after rain.

Iris was said to replenish the rain clouds with water from the sea. Her mother Elektra was a cloud nymph an her father Thaumas, a marine God.

When I worked with Iris, I also looked into the properties of the Iris flower and was delighted to discover that the name 'Iris' was named after the Goddess. The flower relates to strength and courage, also hope, wisdom and trust.

In my meditation she was a young woman dressed in a lilac dress and she gifted me an amethyst.

Amethyst is a stone of protection, one that aids in mental clarity. I find amethyst to be a soothing crystal, promoting calm and dispelling negativity.

Lilac is the colour of my shield, and my message from Iris was one of calm, stepping back, and letting go of negative thought patterns.

My altar to her was dressed in candles of pale green, and yellow with crystals of amethyst, honey calcite for manifestation and unakite for balancing emotions. The offerings that I made were spring flowers.

She was a lovely Goddess to work with for quiet and calm and one that I may revisit.

More from Loki by Heather

This month Loki has had me delving more into His possible fire spirit origins.  It is a good thing that he and Elen get on so well, as together They have revealed paths, with ‘rabbit holes’, to explore on my quest.

There are several reasons why Loki is associated with fire, the most seemingly obvious being that this element is associated with destruction and chaos.  Starting with His birth, the origins of His parents’ names, Farbauti, which means fierce strike and Laufey, which means leaves, could represent the making of fire when lightning strikes dried leaves. Then there is the etymology of His name, which I mentioned in a previous newsletter, the old Norse word logi translates to fire or flame, and Loki is the Germanic root of flame.  Loki’s children with the giantess Angerboda; Hel, the Goddess of death, Jörmungand, the serpent wrapped around the world, and Fenrir, the wolf are also strongly linked to fire and destruction as they are said to be responsible for bringing about Ragnarok.

It was the mention of Loki’s sword which piqued my interest this month, as I couldn’t remember being aware if it before.  Loki found this amusing, as it turns out He was known for wielding a sword called Laeveteinn, which was imbued with the power to create fire and is the only weapon which can slay the mythical rooster Vidofnir, who summons the dawn and lives at the top of the World Tree.

Whether Laevateinn is a sword, wand or twig scholars argue about, as it depends on the translation.  The most agreed though is a sword, as Laevateinn means wounding wand or wand of destruction in Old Norse and it is important to note that wand, in Old Norse, is a word with a symbolic meaning. Also, the root of Laevateinn is Lae, which means cunning, deceitful, or fraud, which uncontrolled fire can be!

According to the saga, Loki had it created with a plan to kill the mythical rooster Vidofnir.  In the Eddic poem Fjolsvinnsmol, the sword was made from a twig snapped from the entrance of Hel’s realm in Niflheim. Later translations have Loki forging Laevateinn from runes found near the gates of Hel’s realm.  Killing a rooster doesn’t seem that important, but this was the only weapon in existence and there are many powerful ones owned by the Norse Gods that could slay Vidofnir.  At Ragnarök Vidofnir, from his perch, would be able to see the giants marching toward Asgard and be able to warn Odin.

Knowing that the sword was so powerful, it was stolen, no information as to who by, shortly after it was created, to be kept in a chest belonging to the giantess Sinmora, the consort of Surtr. Nine locks held the chest closed, which could only be unlocked using the plucked tail feather of Vidofnir!  Some Norse mythology scholars believe Laevateinn to be the sword wielded by the fire giant Surtr during Ragnarök, in his hands, the sword burned with flames, making the already powerful weapon even more impressive.

Recipe for the Month by Heather

Bombay Eggs

From: Practically Pagan - An Alternative Guide to Cooking by Rachel Patterson

The month in which we have Spring Equinox, so it seems fitting to have an egg recipe from Rachel’s book, Practically Pagan An alternative guide to Cooking.  I have added the magical associations for the ingredients.

1 teaspoon cumin seeds – exorcism, protection, safety, security, fidelity, lust, love, abundance, success

2 teaspoons coriander seeds – health, healing, peace, love, release, wealth, prosperity, protection

4 tablespoons vegetable oil – integrity, passion, fertility, healing, peace, protection, luck

1 – 2 finely sliced onions – passion, fertility

4 crushed cloves of garlic – healing, protection, hex breaking, lust, strength, courage

3cm peeled and chopped root ginger – healing, power, love, passion, success, prosperity, protection

2 tins chopped tomatoes – love, passion, protection, creativity

1 tablespoon tomato puree – see above

1 teaspoon salt – cleansing, purification, protection

1 teaspoon sugar – love, protection

½ teaspoon chilli powder – creativity, energy, power, protection, passion

¼ teaspoon ground turmeric – purification, protection, peace

250g/9 oz fresh spinach – passion, fertility, strength

6 eggs – fertility, creation, life, new beginnings, transformation, growth, abundance, divination

Black pepper – protection, exorcism, jealousy, negativity, strength, confidence, gossip

Method

In a large saucepan, toast the cumin and coriander seeds over a medium heat for about 2 minutes, then grind them.

Pour the oil into the pan, return the spices, add the onions and cook for about 5 minutes, then add the garlic and ginger. Cook for another 2 minutes then add the tomatoes.

Leave to cook and reduce for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Add the tomato puree, salt, sugar, chilli powder and turmeric, mix well. Add the spinach and mix again, leave to simmer for 2 minutes.

To bake the eggs, make a well in the tomato sauce then crack an egg into it. Repeat as quickly as possible with the other eggs and put the lid on the pan. Turn the heat down low and cook for 10 minutes or until the whites of the eggs are set.

Finish by sprinkling with fresh black pepper.

Chicken and Egg Prosperity Spell by Heather

From Prosperity Magic by Rachel Patterson

This spell draws upon the fertility energy of the egg and the prosperity and abundance energy of the chicken. If you have access to the internet and a printer you can print off an image of a chicken. If you have a chicken ornament or children’s toy that could be used too.

You will need:

An egg in its shell

An image of a chicken

A green or yellow candle in a safe holder

Lighters or matches

Sharpie or felt tip pen

Set your items in front of you and look at the chicken image, focus on it and get the idea of chicken being prosperity and abundance set into your mind. Say:

“Energy of chicken I call to thee

Bring your prosperity magic to me

Chicken abundance and fertility

Now join this spell lend your help to me”

Light the candle. Sit quietly and focus on the candle flame, visualise money and prosperity coming your way.

Now carefully take the egg and the pen. Draw symbols you associate with abundance, for example the pound or dollar symbol onto the shell of the egg, or a sigil, or write the word ‘money’, ‘abundance’, ‘prosperity’. Keep writing words and symbols onto the shell until you have covered it all. As you do this, say:

“Energy and magic from the chicken and eggshell

Draw prosperity and abundance to me and make it sell

Bring money now and make it quick

From working this egg and chicken trick”

Hold the egg in your hands and sit for a moment, still visualising money coming in and opportunities opening up for abundance to come your way.

When you are ready, snuff out the candle. Take the egg and bury it beneath the soil in your garden. Or you could use a plant pot filled with soil. The egg will break down and feed the earth, whilst releasing your prosperity magic request.

Online Lithomancy Workshop

Our first online workshop for 2026 will be the Art of Lithomancy.

Join Rachel, Heather and Ness for a two hour session discussing what Lithomancy is and how you can work with it for divination purposes.

This workshop will be intereactive so we will be giving you suggestions as to what you can use to put together your own lithomancy set, which will give you the opportunity to discuss what each of the items means to you.

I love the simplicity of Heather's Ogam deck, which arrived a few weeks ago. I also love that it smells of spent gunpowder (party poppers)!
