Solitary Full Moon ritual by Sue Perryman

This ritual is best performed in view of the moon, either outside or near a window with a view. However, don't let that put you off if it isn't possible, the moon's energy is still present.

Decorate your altar with white flowers, candles and other lunar symbols.

You will need:

A cauldron or dark bowl about 3/4 full of water with a silver coin placed inside.

Something to eat and drink.

Like anything, scrying takes practise, if it's your first time practising scrying you may like to have some tarot cards, oracle cards or runes nearby as back up.

Cast a circle in your preferred way. I use the method below, but feel free to use your own words, and If you don't normally cast a circle, purify the area by either smudging or asperging.

' I cast the circle thrice about to cleanse this space and keep harm out Goddess bless this work I do, into my circle I invoke you As I will the circle cast between the worlds I safely pass.'

Stand facing the East and say:

' Guardian of the East, element of Air, you bring the energy of the new moon, new beginnings and the breath of life. You are Spring, knowledge, intellect and our thoughts. I ask you to watch over me, guard, guide and protect me during my ritual. Hail and Welcome.'

Face the South and say:

' Guardian of the South, element of Fire, you bring the energy of the full moon, transformation and healing. You are Summer, passion, creativity and energy. I ask you to watch over me, guard, guide and protect me during my ritual. Hail and Welcome.'

Face the West and say:

'Guardian of the West, element of water, you bring the energy of the waning moon, emotions and the ebb and flow of the tides. You are Autumn, dreams, love and intuition. I ask you to watch over me, guard, guide and protect me during my ritual. Hail and welcome.'

Face the North and say:

'Guardian of the North, element of earth, you bring the energy of the dark moon, fertile soil and growth. You are Winter, stability, strength and fertility. I ask you to watch over me, guard, guide and protect me during my ritual. Hail and welcome.'

Face your altar and say:

' I call to Cerridwen, goddess of the full moon, keeper of the sacred cauldron of rebirth. Share with me your gifts of intuition, wisdom and inspiration and join me in my full mon ritual. Hail and Welcome.'

Stand in the centre of your circle, facing the moon with your arms raised, if it is very bright you may need to focus just above it to save straining your eyes. As you gaze, visualise the Goddess in your mind, call to her and ask her to join you. When you feel certain you can feel her energy within you, lower your arms and cross them over your chest. Recite the Charge of the Goddess, either in your mind or out loud. There are several versions, so pick one you prefer.

The following is adapted by Starhawk from the traditional version by Doreen Valiente:

'Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod, Brigid, and by many other names: Whenever you have need of anything, once a month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me Who is Queen of all the Wise. You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites. Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My Presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth. For My law is love is unto all beings. Mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the cauldron of Cerridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality. I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before. Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured out upon the earth. Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of Heaven, whose body encircles the universe: I Who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters, I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me. For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe. From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return. Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals. Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you. And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without. For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am That which is attained at the end of desire.'

When you are ready, lift your cauldron or bowl of water up towards the moon and ask the Goddess to bless it with the energy of the full moon.

Place your cauldron/bowl on your altar, focus your inner sight on the coin in the water, relax and close your eyes, take a few deep slow breathes and ask the moon to bless your vision. Slowly open your eyes, gazing steadily within the water. You may have to persevere but keep your breathing relaxed and eventually you may start to see the water become misty, vague images may start to appear. Don't worry if nothing happens, like anything scrying takes practise and patience. Eventually the vague images will become clearer and you may either see pictures and symbols or you may receive a message. It's different for everyone. If you do see or hear anything, make note of it and meditate on its meaning when you have time.

If you don't see or hear anything this time you could do some divination with either tarot cards, Oracle cards or runes instead.

When you are ready, thank the Goddess for her assistance have something to eat and drink to ground yourself

Close the circle in your preferred way. This is what I do:

Face the North and say:

' Guardian of the North, element of earth, thank you for watching over and protecting me during my ritual. Hail and farewell.'

Face the West and say:

'Guardian of the West, element of water, thank you for watching over and protecting me during my ritual. Hail and Farewell.'

Face the South and say:

'Guardian of the South, element of fire, thank you for watching over and protecting me during my ritual. Hail and Farewell.'

Face the East and say:

'Guardian of the East, element of air, thank you for watching over and protecting me during my ritual. Hail and Farewell.'

Face your altar and say:

'Cerridwen, goddess of the full moon and sacred cauldron of rebirth, thank you for joining me and sharing your gifts with me during my full moon ritual. Stay if you will, go if you must. Hail and Farewell.'

'The circle is open but unbroken!'
